A Gentleman in Moscow

Author(s): Amor Towles

Historical | Team favourites

On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol. Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval. Can a life without luxury be the richest of all?

KERRYS REVIEW - This is one of the best books I have ever read. The minute you open the first page its like being in the cinema and in awe of what's in front of you. You are literally walking in Count Alexander's shoes, you can taste the meals he eats, you can feel the silk materials on his skin, you are dancing with him in the ballroom, I could go on and on. A story of resistance and dignity no matter what the world throws at you. This story is one of lifes great pleasures to indulge in.  Have a Cognac and settle in for an unforgettable journey with the Count at the Metropole. Massive thumbs up!!
